Art against speculation

Trasformatorio happily partners since 2023

with rossonove.org, a no profit, courageous, one-woman struggle to bring through arts a bit of awareness in her community. She has taste, a great, evocative place right on the sea that is perfect to create and a little car that she drives you around with to search for places, stories, landscapes. The struggle to fight the short sighted ideology of consumption that plagues these otherwise beautiful places. Zero land consumption is the theme, followed by examples of places that could become other if re-imagined. She knows about, link you to those and help you create in them.

We wanted to help. And since the beginning we offered help, contacts, advice, and took hospitality friendship and advice back.

Give it a try!

OPEN CALL — Artist in Residence, Liguria, Italy Zero Land Consumption: Reimagining the Ligurian Coast

“We should feel intimately that we have slipped from a simple ecological crisis to what should rather be called a profound mutation in our relationship with the world.” — Bruno Latour

The Ligurian coast is a landscape under pressure: shaped by short-term tourism, unchecked development and speculation. At Rossonove we answer with a simple principle: zero land consumption. We do not build new spaces — we inhabit the ones that already exist. Abandoned factories, former quarries, a disused oil mill, an empty hotel, a half-finished railway line, contested beaches. Places that resist easy definitions, waiting for new stories.

We believe artists can act as catalysts — infusing alternative imaginaries and new ways of seeing into the landscapes they inhabit, if only for a time. We invite artists of all disciplines, at any stage of their career, to spend three weeks with us in Western Liguria and help this land re-connect.

Where you will work:

  • The Beach — 4 km of contested coastline between Alassio and Laigueglia
  • The Train Line — an unfinished 19th-century line, part of the landscape
  • Ranzi — a quiet mountain hamlet with an abandoned pizzeria and a small vineyard in need of care
  • Former Naval Shipyard — 800 m of abandoned industrial waterfront in Pietra Ligure
  • La Rosagialla Balcony — a suspended terrace overlooking the sea
  • The Caves — former quarries, some still active, some abandoned
  • The Albenga Plain — greenhouses and farmland, plastic-intensive, with an often-invisible migrant workforce
  • Puerta del Sol — an abandoned hotel, once a training ground for the Italian national football team
  • Julia Augusta — a preserved stretch of ancient Roman road, including the Roman “Ponte Lungo” bridge in Albenga
  • Oleificio Roveraro — a former oil mill, empty and crumbling between speculation and regeneration

What we offer: a place to stay (La Casa della Rosa Gialla, with coworking space and a view), a space to work (we introduce you to the landscapes, abandoned spaces and communities of Liguria), and documentation & presentation of your process under open licenses.

How to apply: no required format, no age limit, no CV. Introduce yourself in whatever form suits you — words, images, drawings, sounds. Include a sample of your work and a short proposal: what you’d like to explore and your methodology for site-specific work.

Send your proposal to call@rossonove.org by 31 October 2026.

Rossonove is a non-profit based in Alassio, collaborating with Trasformatorio Foundation and Radio Antidoto. Our guiding principle: zero land consumption — new narratives for the land, without consuming a single extra meter of soil.
