Radio Astronomy in the castle

Gabriele “Asbesto” Zaverio and Aldo Cesar Faga’ installed a short wave radio station in the castle, for listening the 0-30 MHz band and to try occasional transmission with radio amateurs in the world (Asbesto is actually a radio amateur, with callname IW9HGS).

The basic idea was to change the orientation plane of antenna installation, from vertical to horizontal; basically

…the antenna we made is not a traditional shortwave radio amateur dipole antenna; we choosed to shape it differently, using the castle terrain, posing it in an horizontal plane. Our antenna have 5 long wires for the positive of the dipole, and 4 for the negative one, so in total we have 9 wires crossing the main castle court.

A 1:1 Balun (a balance unit made by a ferrite core and some wiring) is used to adapt the antenna impedance to 50 ohm required by our radio equipment (ICOM IC-720A rtx, YAESU FRG-7 Communication Receiver, and MFJ-945E mobile tuner).

So the antenna now is able to receive can i take ativan with benadryl also signal directly from the space, as a sort of radio astronomic observatory; we know that many things can affect  the reception of signals (for example, Jovian emissions), but this is exactly what we are looking for.

antarotPutting cables on site was a challenge, due to strong winds that affected all the work, complicating everything and, literally, freezing us!

vento (AVI video, click to see / download)

We also had bad times due to hardware problems in our radio equipment; an integrate circuit for the band switching was burned. Alberto Novello, incredibly, had the right chip to fix the problem! 🙂

Despite our weird choices, antenna seem surprisingly good both at receiving and transmitting on various frequencies.

We also set up an internet live stream, so now you can also listen what is receive by our station at this url:

Due to shortwave characteristics, the best listenings starts at the afternoon / night.

We’re also working on other kind of installations so… stay tuned! 😉

N.B. Recored with Zoom H4, 50 cm off a closed window in the main castle hall. I actually had in mind to order viagra do a proper recording and this was just a experiment of the setup, then had no time to do a proper walk through. Hopefully some similar conditions will repeat…

Gran giornata…

Changes all around babies, we’re transforming!
After two days with the friends of Teatro Aperto Garbaldi in Palermo (a theater unused by the community hall that 60 brave guys “opened” to create labs and performances) and drinking nights, i finally arrived to little town of Patti. Federico comes and pick me up, it’s a wonderful warm sunny day, the view going up hill is mesmerizing: great green undulated landscapes, the Etna volcano hidden in the smoke behind the Nebrodi mountains, in line with the Eolie islands emerging from the blue distant fog and the Stromboli volcano with its typical smoky head. Everything seems magical here, geometries designed by ancient gods to connect volcanoes, mountains, and holy spots.

We reach the village of Montalbano, of which the old town is really a middle-age pearl surrounded by mountains. The whether here can be harsh at night so you better bring some warm clothes.
But during the day it’s summer already. We settle in the small houses prepared for us. They’re pretty comfortable even if they lack cutlery and dishes, but the rest is all there including fridge, kitchen, bed sheets and shower.
We met Carmelo, the fac-totum of the village, who came very hospitably in perfect Sicilian tradition with a bottle of his wine and nice stories about the declining hazelnut production of the region.
The first night was truly a positive spell on the whole project, we went to Argimusco, a mystical place in which menhirs/dolmens are erected in a lunar landscape.
We had full moon which transformed everything into a Syd Barret’s dream, we sang and dance to celebrate our stay and thank for the hospitality of this generous land, we felt really united and inspired by all surroundings. We’re thinking of using this powerful space for some performative action.
The day after we started organizing: the Sicilian confusion starts, we decided to start taking care of our own cooking/kitchen during our stay here, which will imply a bit of help from everybody, but also much more community-oriented approach better for sharing.
Every step we take around the small climbing streets, we meet the nice people of the village, everybody here is eager to genaric cialis meet us, they’re extremely friendly, often offering wine or coffee and a good talk.
Another conquest is internet, which of course was supposed to be working immediately but was a mess after a thunderstorm. Yesterday we finally fixed it, that’s why we were off-line for few days.

So as you can see we’re working for you, slowly but inexorably setting up the facilities for us all.
At night we had our first guitar session, brought by Daniele (the solar-panel master) and Manuela (painter from Sicily), we had a beautiful singing night, eating tasty pasta cooked by Federico.
By the way, the food here is great of course! You MUST try the cannoli: we found a special place in the center where the ricotta is freshly made and the cannoli are filled on the spot, 1 euro each for a supreme pleasure of your taste buds!!!
At the sunset on the Holy Friday (before Easter) the local community celebrates the holy saints, bringing them down the roads with a marching band accompanying the celebration.
The saints walk down the hill of three crosses and parade around the center, this time we were offered to carry some of them together with the rest of the community. It was quite an experience, they’re
very heavy and takes a long time to parade around. For a lapse of time, we felt close to religion again, after all these last years of subversive ideas.

Some basic information:
if you come from Messina, take the train that goes towards Palermo, roughly one every hour, for the little 6 euros, you reach Patti in 1,5 hours we come an pick you up.
from Catania take the bus from outside the airport, it will take you to Messina with 7 euros from there you get the train as explained above
if you come from Palermo/Trapani, take the train that goes towards Messina, roughly one every hour, 10 euros, 3 hours to Patti.
Call us for any question/inconvenience: 392 6692017 Federico

Bring glasses, dish, cutlery, things for your work, a light torch for the night trips, some good shoes for trekking or sport are a good idea. And Federico adds: “pen and paper”!!!!

Installazioni Immersive

Emanuel Andel e Antony Raijkov (AU)

Trasformatorio Team con Alberto Novello (IT/NL) Carlo Natoli (IT) e altri artisti ospiti

M. Eugenia Demeglio (IT/ UK)

Trasformazioni e Immagine Digitale

Guido Gaudioso (IT)

Immersive Installations

Emanuel Andel e Antony Raijkov (AU)

The Hypercube is a fully interactive audio-visual instrument. It allows the performer to generate realtime audiovisual content based on their body movements while listening and dancing to music.

With the Hypercube project we would like to examine the process of impact between music and visuals through the performer as connection point. For this project we developed a 3D tracking software, as well as the generative visual algorithms using vvvv, for music we are using ableton live – in realtime.

The idea is to build a hypercube within the existing exterior of the village – replacing the walls of the hypercube with the walls of the castle.

It will be a very interesting platform for musicians, dancers, performers and visual artists with whom we are looking forward to work with after a week of setup & preparation. We’ll use the second week to explain and work with the system and develop one or more performances together with people on site.

Art Events Documentation, Microblogging and Shooting (AU/DE) is a platform for media art – for the support of an active discourse from, with and by the protagonists, the media artists themselves. As an on-line medium it is easy accessible and therefore also operates as an art promoter across the physical borders of exhibitions and festivals. was founded 2006 as a pure online documentation platform by four media art students from the need to complement a disregarded media coverage about new media art festivals. With an experimental and individual way of documentation we wanted to make media art accessible for everyone.

Because the tagR team primarily consists of media artists and students who are in some cases invited to the events themselves, a new insider’s perspective of the reporting originates and leads to deeper discourse and exchange.

Over the years the cooperations with festivals deepened and opened new ways and perspectives and therefore also changed the role of e.g.: Transmediale in Berlin and the ARS Electronica in Linz provided us with a temporary workspace and therefore we were integrated in the Festival and additionally became a center for exchange and discourse on site.

The work with our mobile interview studio “umbr.ella“, a reconstructed umbrella, attracts a lot of sensation by its performative character and therefore acts as an intervention at art events by its own. „umbr.ella“ was invented by the media artist Ella Esque and is only one kind of interview technique > the strategy and approach to document the works is subject to the individual style of every tagR within the team. supports their members with the organization of accreditations and the contact with festivals and the artists. Furthermore we try to provide travel expenses for our tagR team as far as possible. In this way we facilitate our members with the access to the festivals and therefore stimulate active involvement into the art discourse.

By an improved infrastructure, like video cameras, microphones, a computer and an office space in MuseumsQuartier, can expand its activities. The office in the MuseumsQuartier additionally became an exchange platform about media art and offers a space for Workshops and discussions. was established in 2006 by Andreas ‘Muk’ Haider, Emanuel Andel, Ella Esque, Martin Ferstl and Peter Scharmüller.
Our workshop will engage participants in the construction of the reportage around the Trasformatorio. We intend to form participant on the delicate task of speaking of art, shoot and edit interviews and documentation of processes and events, talk about what’s been seen and imagined. And distribute it the best way.

Sculpture and Performance with food

Elles Kiers (NL)

Elles is an artist of transformation. She works with situations, stories and with the human material that surrounds her in order to produce special events. The events will not leave a trace only to one’s visual memory, but also to the olfactory and sensorial memories. Her work is usually edible, but the food is never divorced from a refined context in which many essential threads can be met and, if desired, be followed up in the middle of a maze of relationships and thin semantic sensations.

Trasformatorio Team with Alberto Novello (IT / NL) Carlo Natoli (IT) and other guest artists

The theme of the workshop is sound. Electroacoustic or natural instruments sung by the wind, electroacoustic instruments and drones, tone generators, transducers, improvisation in space, resonances.

The musicians will be busy searching for the most improbable locations for their sound machines to play and interact with dancers, actors and other artists, devising sound and music for all areas of experimentation.

The Playing Body

M. Eugenia Demeglio (IT/ UK)

Intensive workshop of improvisation, composition and relationship with sound.
In the workshop we will work in two phases.
During the first, the work will focus on structure and on state of alert, it will be therefore an introduction to Instant Composition. We will explore the question “How can I understand the bigger picture and therefore influence it as an individual within the system?”
In the second part we will focus on the power of the moment by transforming the body into a resonance box. The bodies, deprived of any kind of ego or history, become purely reactive to the vibrations that come from within, from others and from sounds, in a dynamic continuum of sophisticated movements and sounds, the presence of which is triggered by the instant choices and interaction.

The workshop envisions the active participation of musicians and aims to provide participants with tools transferable to other disciplines, with a different experience of one’s kinetic and expressive possibilities and with the exploration of the idea of structure through actions.

Transformations and Digital Imaging

Guido Gaudioso (IT)

The Portrait and Selfportrait in Photography. The laboratory offers a path of research and application of contemporary photography and its use as a tool of investigation on human beings and the concept of identity.

From the technical point of view, the main feature of the workshop will be to propose a continuous crossing with other artistic disciplines and, within the photograph, with the passions that make it up: from analog photography to digital photography.

From the point of view of the conceptual approach, the initial premise is the homage to the ancient alchemical tradition and the subsequent application, for purposes of photographic research, to some references of the modern Situationism.

In analogue photography:

– Silver gelatine that make up the image. The treatment and the development of the film.

– The reconciliation of opposites: from darkness to light. The Camera Obscura. Approach to the techniques of printing on paper and other materials.

– Research alchemy: Nigredo, the phase of dissolution and decay. Selfportrait and Self-reflection in the Other.

In digital photography:

– The staging of a portrait.

– Experiments Photo of Détournement.

– The metamorphosis.

– The creation of a site specific photographic work.

During the workshop, the following tools will be set up and made available to the participants: a dark room with the necessary equipment for developing and printing, a set of lights and backdrop for portraits, workstations for digital image processing. Each tool made available to the participants to be used for the purposes of the workshop and for the execution of related works. At the end of the workshop, there will be an exhibition with the works of the participants.
